Playing It Forward!

The band has an ongoing outreach program to provide musical instruments to local title 1 elementary and middle schools. This endeavor started nearly five years ago when we reached our 50th year and started a fundraiser called “50 at 50” — with the goal of raising $50,000. A recent $15,000 grant from BallenIsles Charities Foundation helped us to meet our goal!

In February 2015 the band donated violins to the elementary-school musicians at U.B. Kinsey in West Palm Beach. Susan Rodberg is the dedicated music teacher in charge of the El Sistema program there. The kindergarten students begin instruction in the fall with papier-mâché violins and then graduate to real ¼-size violins. Many of last year’s students moved to ½-size violins, and the ¼-size violins will be recycled for use by other students. Year after year this continues as each new class starts its musical instruction.

A true example of p(l)aying it forward!
