Throat singing technique: some secrets from the simplest

The technique of throat singing cannot be mastered like this, just reading books or articles on the topic. Partly because the person who is eager to learn this art lacks the very idea of ​​such singing, and partly also because outside control is important in the practice of teaching. In any case, the theoretical information provided to you should be used rather as an addition to think about and understand the practice of singing, but you need to learn to sing at least by video, if this is not possible live. Before speaking about the technique of throat singing, let us consider the question of the sounds that make up our voice.

Three sound floors can be distinguished, the colors of which are mixed and transformed into a single voice stream: the middle floor is a bourdon, the sound obtained by closing or vibration of the vocal cords; upper floor – overtone (“above” tone) obtained by vibration of the head resonators; lower floor – Unterton, in which the soft tissues of the larynx vibrate. All these tones are summed up, then the vibrations of the whole body are mixed with them, and after the sound comes out, it encounters an external environment that has its own acoustic properties.

SINGING OF ANCIENT Overtone throat singing is found in the cultures of many peoples of the world; in the modern listener, it is more associated with shamans and Tibetan monks.However, it is recommended for all vocalists to use at least khoomei (one of the styles of throat singing) as elements of a chant, since the timbre as a result of such exercises is enriched with overtones and becomes more saturated.

HOOMEY – PREPARATION So, the technique of the simplest and most basic style of overtone throat singing is khoomei. During its execution, a natural voice predominantly sounds, to which overtone decorations extracted using the upper resonators are added. In order to extract such sounds, first you need to warm up the vocal apparatus with the help of singing simple long vowels: aaa, oooh, uuu, uh, uh … Try to send a voice to a certain point that is far from you. For example, if you are standing by a window, select a tree or a window of the house opposite. And sing. Do not be afraid of the volume, because in an undertone you will not train yourself.

TECHNOLOGY OF THE NECK OF HOOME To sing a khoomei, one must learn to relax the lower jaw and open it in such a way as to find the desired angle. In this case, the focus is not on the throat, but on the root of the tongue. There is a trick: if you lower the lower jaw too much, then pass the throat, and if too little, the sound will be flat and pinched. The desired angle is only in practice. And again we begin to sing vowel sounds, in parallel, we are looking for the desired position of the language.

IMPORTANT NOTES The main thing is to be convenient! It can itch your nose, lips – this is normal. There are lower register throat singing techniques, but this is a more complex and separate topic. Hoomei can be sung by both men and women; as for other styles – in terms of accessibility to the female body, they are more complex. Shamans living in Siberia do not recommend women to constantly practice more complex styles of throat singing, which are comparable in case with men to singing, because this leads to a change in hormonal balance.
