Christmas song “Silent Night, Wondrous Night”: sheet music and creation story
On the wall of an old school in the Austrian town of Arndorf, and now there is a memorial plaque. The inscription tells that there are two people in these walls – the teacher Franz Grubber and the priest Joseph More in a single impulse wrote the beautiful hymn “Silent night, wonderful night …”, receiving inspiration from the Creator of the worlds. This immortal work will be 200 years old in 2018. And many will be interested in the history of its creation.
NIGHT LOCATING IN THE TEACHER’S APARTMENT In the poor apartment, the teachers of Grubber did not light the lamps, it was a hopeless night. Little Marichen – the only child of the young couple, went into eternity. Father, too, was hard at heart, but he tried to come to terms with the loss that befell them. But the inconsolable mother could not cope with this blow. She did not utter a word, did not cry, remaining indifferent to everything. Her husband consoled, exhorted, surrounding with care and tenderness, offered to eat or at least drink water. The woman did not react to anything and slowly faded away. Driven by a sense of duty, Franz Grubber came to the church that Christmas party for the kids that Christmas evening. With sadness, he peered into their happy faces and then returned to his gloomy apartment again.
A STAR CONTAINING INSPIRATION Franz, trying to dispel the oppressive silence, began to tell his wife about the service, but in response – not a word. After fruitless attempts, he sat down at the piano. His musical talent kept in memory so many beautiful tunes of great composers that draw hearts to heaven, delighting and comforting. What to play this evening for the grieving spouse? Grubber’s fingers felt keys at random, and he himself was looking for a sign in the sky, some kind of vision. His gaze suddenly settled on a distant star that shone in the dark sky. From there, from a height of heaven, a ray of love descended. He filled a man’s heart with such joy and an unearthly world that he began to sing, improvising an amazing melody: Silent night, wonderful night. HERE And, lo and behold! The inconsolable mother, as it were, was awakened by grief that bound her heart. A sob erupted from her chest, and tears streamed down her cheeks with a stream. She immediately rushed to her husband’s neck, and together they completed the performance of the born anthem. 1818 CHRISTMAS Eve – PSALM’S BIRTHDAY That night, Franz Grubber, through the snowstorm and bad weather, rushed to Pastor Maura for 6 kilometers. Joseph, reverently listening to improvisation, immediately wrote the soulful words of the song based on her motives. And together they sang the Christmas carol, which was subsequently destined to become famous. Full text and notes for the choir – HERE On Christmas Day, the authors of the psalm performed it for the first time in front of the parishioners in St. Nicholas Cathedral. And everyone clearly felt that they know these words and the melody well and can sing along, although they hear it for the first time.
SEARCHING THE AUTHORS PSALM “Silent Night” very quickly spread to cities in Austria and Germany. The names of its authors remained unknown (they themselves did not seek fame). Celebrating Christmas in 1853, the Prussian king Frederick William IV was shocked to hear “Silent Night”. The court accompanist was ordered to track down the authors of this song. How was this done? Grubber and More were not famous. Joseph by that time had died a beggar, not having lived even 60 years. And Franz Grubber could have been looked for a long time, if not for one case. Salzburg Choir on the eve of Christmas in 1854 rehearsed “Silent Night”. One of the choristers named Felix Grubber sang it differently, not like everyone else. And not at all as the choir regent taught. Having received a comment, he politely replied: “I sing as my father taught me. And father knows best how to sing. After all, he himself composed this song. ” Fortunately, the choir regent knew the accompanist of the King of Prussia and he knew the order … Thus, Franz Grubber spent the rest of his days in abundance and honor.
THE VICTORY START OF THE INSPIRED CHRISTMAS PSALM As early as 1839, the Tyrolean Singers ensemble of the Reiner family performed this amazing Christmas carol in America during their concert tour. It was a tremendous success, so they immediately translated into English, and Silent Night has since begun to sound everywhere. At one time, an interesting testimony of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber traveling in Tibet, was published. He decided in Lhasa to arrange a Christmas holiday. And he was simply shocked when students of British schools sang “Silent Night” with him. The night is quiet, the night is holy … This marvelous Christmas carol sounds on all continents. It is performed by huge choirs, small groups and individual vocalists. The penetrating words of the Christmas Good News, together with the heavenly melody, win the hearts of people.
