How to overcome the constriction in the voice?
Tightness in the voice is a problem that accompanies many vocalists. As a rule, the higher the note, the more the voice is jammed, and the more difficult it becomes to sing further. A squeezed voice most often sounds like a scream, and this scream results in the occurrence of “kicks”, the voice breaks or, as they say, “gives a cock”. This problem is significant for the singer, so getting rid of it is not easy, but, as they say, there is nothing impossible. So, let’s talk about how to remove the constriction in the voice? PHYSIOLOGY In vocals, as in sports, everything is based on physiology. We must feel physically that we are singing correctly.
And to sing correctly means to sing freely. The correct singing position is an open yawn. How to make such a position? Just yawn! You feel that a dome has formed in your mouth, a small tongue is raised, your tongue is relaxed – this is called a yawn. The higher the sound, the more stretch the yawn, but leave the jaw in one position. So that the sound when singing is free and full, you need to sing in this position. And also, do not forget to show everyone your teeth, sing with a smile, that is, make a “bracket”, show a funny “smile”. Direct the sound through the upper palate, take it out – if the sound remains inside, it will in no case sound beautiful. Make sure that the larynx does not rise, and the ligaments are relaxed, do not press on the sound. Keep the bracket and yawning position throughout your singing: both in chants and in songs. The sound will then become lighter and you will notice that it has become easier to sing. Of course, the problem will not go away after the first attempt, it is necessary that the new position consolidate and become a habit, the result will not be long in coming. EXERCISES Singing in order to get rid of the constriction in the voice is also based on physiology. When doing the exercises, the main thing is to keep the position and the bracket. You can sing Bdea, Bdea, Bde, Bde, Bria-Bria-Bria-Bria-Brie, Miya-Miya-Miya-Miya-mi, Luya-Luya-Luya-Luya-Lu, going down 5 sounds of tonality, for example: from “salt” to “to” in C major.
Do not forget to leave the jaw in one position and keep the larynx and ligaments in a free state, without changing position. Sing “Mi” on the notes do-sol-fa-mi-re-do, staying in the same position on the upper and lower sounds, gradually increase the tonality.
