Vocal and singing Velvet voice of contralto. What is the main secret of his popularity

Contralto is one of the brightest female voices. Its velvety low sound is often compared to a cello. This voice is quite rare in nature, so it is very appreciated for its beautiful timbre and for the fact that it has the lowest notes for women.

HOW AND WHEN A CONTRALTO IS FORMED This voice has its own characteristics of formation. Most often, it can be determined after 14 or 18 years. The female voice of the contralto is mainly formed of 2 children: low alt, which from an early age has a pronounced chest register or soprano with an inexpressive timbre. Usually by the transitional age, the first voice acquires a beautiful low sound with a velvety chest register, and the second unexpectedly expands the range for everyone and starts to sound beautiful after adolescence. Many girls are surprised at the changes and the fact that the range becomes lower, and the voice acquires beautiful expressive low notes. Such a situation often occurs: a girl with an inexpressive 1 soprano is told that she has a weak voice and she should not professionally engage in vocals.

And then, after about 14 years old, they have expressive chest notes and a feminine sound, which is characteristic of contralto. Upper case gradually becomes colorless and expressionless, and low notes, on the contrary, acquire a beautiful chest sound. Unlike mezzo-soprano, this type of contralto in sound does not resemble a juicy girlish voice, but the voice of a very adult woman, much older than her calendar age. If the mezzo-soprano voice sounds velvety, but very juicy and beautiful, then the contralto has a small hoarseness that the average female voice does not have. An example of such a voice is singer Vera Brezhneva. She had a high soprano in her childhood, which, unlike other children’s voices, seemed inexpressive and colorless.

Whereas in adolescence other sopranos only gained strength and grew richer in their timbre, beauty and pectoral notes, while in Vera the colors of her voice gradually lost their expressiveness, but the chest register expanded. And in adulthood, a rather expressive female contralto voice was formed in her, which sounds deep and original. A vivid example of such a voice can be heard in the songs “Help me” and “Good day”. Another type of contralto is formed already in childhood. These voices have a rough sound and often sing in the part of the violas in the school choir. By the transitional age, they become mezzo-sopranos and dramatic sopranos, and some turn into deep contralto. In colloquial speech, such voices sound rude, becoming like boys. Girls with such voices are sometimes victims of ridicule from their peers, and they are often called male names.

In adolescence, this type of contralto becomes juicier and lower, although the male timbre does not disappear. It is often difficult to understand in a record who is singing, a guy or a girl. If other altos become mezzo-soprano or dramatic soprano, then the contralto opens the chest register. Many girls even begin to boast that they can easily copy male voices. An example of such a contralto could be Irina Zabiyaka, a girl from the Chile group, who always had a low voice. By the way, she was engaged in academic vocals for many years, which allowed her to reveal her range.

Another example of a rare contralto that forms after 18 years is the voice of Nadezhda Babkina. Since childhood, she sang in the violas, and when she entered the conservatory, professors identified her voice as a dramatic mezzo-soprano. But by the end of her studies, her low range expanded and by the age of 24 she had developed a beautiful female contralto voice.

WHY THIS VOICE IS VALUED MORE THAN OTHERS In the opera, such a voice is rare, since there are not too many contralto matching academic requirements. For opera singing, the contralto should not only be low enough, but also sound expressively without a microphone, and such strong voices are not common. Therefore, girls with contralto go singing on stage or in jazz. In choral singing, low voices will always be in demand, as there are always not enough altos with a beautiful low timbre. By the way, in the jazz direction the contralto is the most, because the specificity of the music not only allows them to beautifully reveal their natural timbre, but also play their voices in different parts of their range. Especially a lot of contralto among African-Americans or mulattos. Their special chest timbre in itself becomes an adornment of any jazz composition or song in the style of “soul”. A bright representative of such a voice was Tony Brexton, whose hit “Unbreak my heart” could not be sung beautifully by any singer, even with a very low voice. In the stage, contralto is appreciated due to its beautiful velvety timbre and feminine sound.
