ALEXEY ZIMAKOV: MAGNIFICENT, GENIUS, Fighter
Alexey Viktorovich Zimakov was born on January 3, 1971. in the Siberian city of Tomsk. He is an outstanding Russian guitarist. A brilliant performer, an amazing virtuoso. It has extraordinary musicality, inaccessible technique and clean performance. Received recognition in Russia and abroad. In his 20s, he became a laureate of prestigious national and international competitions. This is a rare case of such an early ascent of a national guitarist to the Olympus of musical art. At the peak of his fame, he was the only one to achieve the virtuoso performance of some incredibly complex pieces. When Alexei was 16 years old, he impressed the music community with his space performance technique in his own arrangement of virtuoso music.
He achieved a new sound of a guitar close to orchestral, comparable to it. Is it not a miracle that at such an early age he brilliantly performed in his own interpretation, arrangements for guitar and piano, the Campanella rondo finale and the Second Paganini violin concert !!! The recording of this wonderful concert was shown on Tomsk television in the late 80s … His father, Viktor Ivanovich, began to teach Alexei how to play the guitar. Tell me honestly, you would probably be a little surprised if someone would tell you that the first teacher of Alexei was the commander of a nuclear submarine of the Russian naval forces.
Yes, you heard right. Indeed, the boy’s father spent many years under water in full combat readiness. It was there, in his “Nautilus”, in the rare moments of rest, Viktor Ivanovich played the guitar. If the echo sounders of enemy anti-submarine ships could listen to what is happening on Russian submarines, then it is not difficult to imagine the amazement and abhorrence of enemy acoustics from the sounds of the guitar. You will probably be interested to know that at the end of the naval service, changing his military uniform to civilian clothes, Viktor Ivanovich remained loyal to the guitar: he was one of the founders of the Classical Guitar Club at the Scientists House in Tomsk. A personal example of parents, as a rule, has a powerful effect on the formation of addictions of children. The same thing happened in the Zimakov family.
According to Alexei, his father often played music, and this greatly influenced his son’s choice of his path in life. Alexei wanted to extract the melody from a beautiful instrument himself. Noting the son’s sincere interest in guitar, his father in a commanding voice set the task for Alexei: “learn to play the guitar by nine years old!” When young Alexei got his first guitar skills and especially when he realized that he was able to build musical “palaces and castles” from notes, as in the constructor of “LEGO”, he developed a real love for the guitar. A little later, experimenting with the melody, constructing it, Alexei realized that music is richer and more diverse than any of the most sophisticated “transformers”. Is it not from here, from childhood, that Alexei’s craving for the construction of new possibilities for the sound of the guitar originated. And what polyphonic horizons he could open as a result of a new reading of the symphonic interaction of guitar and piano! But back to the youthful years of Alexei.
Home education gave way to studies at the Tomsk College of Music. The deep knowledge that the father gave his son, as well as Alexey’s natural abilities, helped him become a better student. According to teachers, he was noticeably ahead of the official curriculum. A talented boy was not only saturated with knowledge, but also helped him to improve and hone his skills. Alexey studied well and brilliantly graduated from college. His name is included in the list of the best graduates of this educational institution. Alexei Zimakov continued his musical education at the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music in the class of N.A. Nemolyaev. In 1993 successfully completed his studies at the academy. Higher musical education was received at the graduate school of the Academy from the Honored Artist of Russia (classical guitar), Professor Alexander Kamillovich Frauchi.
At the age of 19, Alexei became the only guitarist in modern Russian history who managed to win the first prize at the IV All-Russian competition of folk instrument performers (1990). Zimakov’s titanic work did not pass without a trace. The talented Russian guitarist was appreciated by the world music community. Success followed success. In 1990 he won the First Prize at the International Competition in Tychy (Poland). A very significant milestone in Alexey’s career was his participation in the prestigious annual international guitar competition in Miami (USA). The program of his performance included “Invocation y Danza” by Joaquino Rodrigo, three pieces from the series “Castles of Spain” by Frederico Torroba and “Fantasy on the Russian Folk Songs” by Sergey Orekhov. The jury noted in Zimakov’s game vivid coloring, dynamics and special poetry in the performance of works by Torroba.
