The Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches welcomes special guest soloist Greg Diaz for an evening of jazz with Swing+Salsa, a concert to be presented at the Eissey Campus Theatre in Palm Beach Gardens on Saturday, February 3, and repeated at the Duncan Theatre in Lake Worth (limited availability) on Saturday, February 10. Both shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets ($20) are available at 561-832-3115 or here. Concert proceeds fund scholarships and grants to local public school music programs.
“As a seasoned professional and compelling front man, Greg Diaz fits seamlessly into the existing talent and versatility of the Symphonic Band. Multiple soloists, vocal and instrumental, will help carry our audience to places of unexpected adventure and delight,” said Symphonic Band Music Director Mark Humphreys.
Billboard Chart toppers are featured during the performance: “Sir Duke,” the Stevie Wonder hit honoring Duke Ellington, and “Carpenters Forever,” which is composed of six of the most popular songs from Karen and Richard Carpenter. Another featured hit is the John Williams composition, “Swing, Swing, Swing,” from the comedy movie “1941.”
The Grammy Award-winning Brazilian composer, Antonio Carlos Jobim, lends two of his tunes for the night’s entertainment. “Wave” showcases a beautiful trombone solo while “Samba de Uma Nota So” translates as “One Note Samba” and is a well-known bossa nova piece.
Dizzy Gillespie’s famous “Manteca,” “Tico-Tico” by Brazilian musician and composer Zequinha Abreu, and Bob Lowden’s arrangement of “Big Band Bash” round out the program.
